What Are the ‘Wings’ of a Horse Jump?

To put it simply, the ‘wings’ of a horse jump are the two tall features that stand on either side of a jump’s pole or poles. At their simplest, they merely perform the job of holding up the bars that a horse must jump over when the animal and its rider are competing in a tournament or when they are practicing for a tournament. As the wing types become more elaborate, they more often have the additional task of making a jump look more appealing to the eye.

wing standard horse jump, which is likely less expensive, tends to look plainer than its more expensive and decorative counterpart. The cheapest and least quality version of this may just look like a decently tall tube that sits at a perpendicular angle to the bars when they are placed on it at a perpendicular angle. There are also wings that resemble objects you would associate with horses or ranches, such as fences at this level. Wings that are in this shape make the jump look more attractive.

Beyond the standard type, there are wings such as those which can be custom-made to fulfill a certain look or purpose. These can have very stunning and decorative abstract shapes with many bright colors or they can have many recognizable shapes such as horses, horseshoes, clouds, butterflies, signs or anything else that you can imagine. Oftentimes, certain ranches or shows will have wings made that can better represent their business than standard versions.

Wings are probably the most important part of a jump when it comes to how the jump actually looks. This means that if you want equipment merely for practicing, you can go with less expensive standard wings. You can get custom and more elaborate wings if you want your equipment to look impressive to help promote your own brand.
